Janet Clark Bio

Janet has a BA Honours degree in Education and has been working restoratively in schools for the past nine years.  One of Janet’s previous roles was as the RJ School Coordinator, as part of the second phase of the YJB Pilot Projects, ‘Restorative Justice in Schools’, during 2002 to 2004, in Hammersmith and Fulham. During the project, exclusion was reduced by 65% and the success of the project lead the way for the project to then role out nationally across other areas involving 22 schools in total. Janet continued to promote and practice restorative approaches throughout her work in the school.

A previous head teacher of her school said ‘it is one of the most successful projects in the school so far’.  Janet was closely involved in the production of ‘Laters’ a restorative justice training video, funded by Westminster City Council, currently featured on Teachers TV and more recently, a production called ‘Schools and Crime’, involving a conference in a Bristol Secondary School. Following the national recognition of the restorative work in the school project, which was evaluated for the YJB by Partners in Evaluation, Janet then continued her work in an award winning,  (Avon and Somerset LCJB for ‘Innovation’), demonstration project in Bristol Secondary Schools, RAiS (Restorative Approaches in Schools), as Project Manager.  This project worked across 9 secondary schools, including academies, and trained over 1200 staff and pupils in restorative approaches, and run in excess of 450 conferences.  The project has been evaluated by Kings College London and has proved an extremely successful venture indicating five key areas of success in the use of RA. The project’s evaluation and guidance document was launched in October, 2009 in the presence of HRH Princess Anne, to an audience of 120 delegates. Janet is a successful practitioner, speaker and trainer. Training has included schools, youth offending teams, residential care home staff, Mediators, Safer schools Police Officers, Pupil Referral Units, and training courses to train trainers. Janet will be continuing to promote the success of the RAiS project. Janet is also involved in lecturing at UWE (University of West of England) in modules for Restorative Approaches in behaviour modules.  Janet firmly believes there is a fundamental place for restorative practices in schools.
